To Be Or Not To Be?

As Edmund, David Andrew Macdonald has gone from bad to good to worse with an ease that is a testament to his talent. "I've always liked character roles," he confesses, "but I prefer what opera refers to as 'fit business'". The term is applied to the character who ranks after the leading and secondary actors but without whom the story would lack its numerous twists and turns. "A good example would be Cassio from 'Othello'", the actor points out. "He's 'fit business'. They're not necessarily in all the scenes, but the play's going in one direction, and they come in and knock it all in another direction!" He believes this provides plenty of room for confusion and conflict, especially as "they come back later and say, 'What's going on?'" What other roles would he like to tackle? Besides appearing as 'fit business', Macdonald says that he would like to play "pretty much any character by George Bernard Shaw!"
