Gossip (excerpt)

David Andrew Macdonald (Edmund, Guiding Light), however, is definitely descended from the Macdonald clan, one of the most powerful of all the Scottish clans. He has two tartans, one from Macdonald of Clanranald and one from the Macdonalds of Glenaladale and Boredale. The Clanranald branch--if that's what it's called--comes with its own family crest: a right arm holding a sword, emerging from a castle, with the motto "My Hope is Constant in Thee."
But it's through the other Macdonald that this TV prince comes close to claiming a title. "There are only four males left in all the world of the Macdonalds of Glenaladale and Boredale: My cousin Ian; his son, Alexander; myself; and my son, Ian. My cousin Ian is the chieftain. I was in line to become chieftain, but he has Alexander, and the title is probably not going to come to me." It's sort of an empty title anyway. "The estates were taken out of the family in 1912 by the Red Witch. The Red Witch was married to my cousin John Macdonald, and as he was dying she rewrote his will leaving all of the estate--10,000 acres--to her family (ergo, her epithet)...My father and my uncle tried to buy back the 20-bedroom mansion in 1948, but they couldn't get the money together--and it was only something like 1,500 pounds." The house is now a hotel in his former family seat, Glenfinnan.
