Laura Wright and David Andrew Macdonald: Let's Talk About
Sex...
Me and My Character(s): Laura Wright (Cassie) and David Andrew Macdonald
(Edmund)
They are Springfield's least-likely couple. After all, she used to be married
to his brother, and he is the man who did everything to keep them apart.
(Edmund also kidnapped Cassie, locked her in a tower, and was inadvertently
responsible for the death of her unborn child...but who's counting?). And,
then, of course, there's the tiny fact that Cassie's newest hotel guest happens
to be a dead-ringer for her late husband.
But in spite of the seeming obstacles, Cassie and Edmund have found each
other. They made love for the first time prior to the Bauer BBQ and, since
then, Edmund has shown himself to not only be quite handy with Cassie's kids,
he's also refrained from engaging in any nefarious activity. For
weeks!
If that's not love, what is?
SoapCity went straight to the source, actors Laura Wright and David Andrew
Macdonald, for all the scoop! Alas, the two actors just couldn't keep their
minds off one particular
subject...
SoapCityAlina: Where is Cassie and Edmund's relationship at this point? Where
are their heads regarding each other?
David Andrew Macdonald: I think it's safe to assume that Cassie is really
truly and madly in love with Edmund, because so is Edmund.
Laura Wright: So you think that, huh?
DAM: I'm just throwing it out there for
consumption.
SCA: What went through Cassie and Edmund's heads after the first time they
made love?
DAM: When are we going to sleep together again? He may be a character on
daytime but he's still a man.
LW: He thinks, you know, with his--
DAM: No. I think he's obviously thinking about that, but in terms of where
the character is, he's thinking about that because it's an intimacy he hasn't
had before. It's someplace he'd like to be right now. It gives him self.
It gives him a security. It gives him a sense of future. All of which will
be dashed on the rocks. along with his heart, I'm sure. Just when I've committed
myself beyond where it's safe to go, she's going to go, "Yeah, sorry.
Sorry."
LW: I hope so. It would be perfect.
DAM: She's going to wake up from a dream sequence and go,
"Ugh!"
LW: "Oh my God. That was the worst dream I had!" And then Richard sits up
next to me and goes, "Darling." Because, you know, what Cassie is thinking
is, "Oh my God! I can't believe I waited a year!" And then it was, "Aaah!
Oh my God! I can't believe I screwed Edmund." That's pretty much what she's
thinking.
DAM: A little more ladylike, maybe?
LW: Well yeah, I guess so. Oh, I don't know. It depends on which Cassie,
the old Cassie or the new Cassie.
SCA: Who are these two Cassies?
LW: Well, as Edmund so nicely pointed out--
DAM: What did I say?
LW: That Cassie is uptight.
SCA: For an ex-stripper, or in general?
LW: Well, since Richard died, Cassie's been very organized and keeping things
in order so I can have control of my life, which makes sense. It would have
been nice if I could have played that for the past year instead of just finding
out that I'm like that. But, at least I get it now. So that's interesting.
I guess Edmund is going to help loosen Cassie
up.
SCA: And how are you going to do that,
David?
DAM: I'm going to leave it to the viewers' imaginations. My feeling is that
I'm really not quite sure who Edmund is at this point, and that's not a bad
thing.
LW: Did you notice he lost the accent?
DAM: Yeah, Edmund lost the accent. Kind of lost his
elitism.
SCA: Where did the accent go? Inquiring minds want to
know!
DAM: It went with the breeze. I think they just decided that the accent was
alienating him too much from the audience. You can't be romantic in America
with an accent. It was also associated too much with the past. So there it
went. It was never really explained. I threw in a few ad-libs in one episode
to try to explain it. I said to Alexandra, "I'm changing that about myself.
If you haven't noticed, I'm changing a lot about myself." That's the thing
I threw in. Look, our two characters have been working together for a long
time in a very different way than we're obviously working now. But I think,
in terms of where the story is going, they're going to find out where the
best mileage is. And of course the best mileage in any daytime is a push
me/pull you thing.
SCA: Is the push me/pull you coming from within the characters, or is it
external? For instance, does Cassie care what people think of her new
relationship?
LW: No. I think that she's letting it go. Rick Bauer had a line during the
BBQ where we're doing the egg toss and he said, "Be careful, Edmund, you
might get egg all over your face. I mean, your hands." Cassie thinks that's
kind of funny, because people have their beef with this guy, and I'm not
going to jump in and save him.
DAM: Have their beef might be sort of an understatement. He tried to kill
your sister twice!
LW: My child is dead (because of him), and I can't have children now but,
you know, whatever! He's changed, he's changed! I think that's one of the
funniest things about this, how willing she is to let Edmund get is. "This
is what you get, Edmund. This is your
karma."
SCA: And what does Edmund think about that? Does he think he needs to pay
a certain penance?
DAM: Yeah, pretty much.
LW: But then, of course, it goes back to him and Cassie having
sex.
DAM: Exactly. Edmund is thinking, "I'm really, really sorry. Can we go have
sex now? I"m really sorry."
LW: He's thinking, "Can we go have sex now? So I can show you how sorry I
am."
