The Happy-Go-Lucky David Andrew Macdonald
Does Edmund create his own luck?
"There's a lot to be said for circumstance, but Edmund twists and moves his
way out of a lot of things. He firmly bends the truth in a direction that
serves him better. Also, Richard's long-standing compassion for Edmund has
afforded Edmund opportunities, which he has taken advantage of."
What's the most fortunate thing that's happened to Edmund?
"He probably thinks it's being the true heir to the throne, but really, it's
that Beth has returned his affections."
What would have happened to Edmund if he lived in America?
"With the American justice system,we would like to believe that he'd be
incarcerated. But let's face it: He's about as rich as they come. Even in
America, he would be considered something close to royalty, and they often
get away with murder--quite literally."
Would Edmund be as lucky had he not been born wealthy?
"Edmund's crafty head crosses across all economic lines. He would have gone
out of his way to make luck happen."
Any superstitions?
"When I leave the house and have to come back in because I've forgotten
something, I sit down and count to 10. It's an Irish thing. But I'll walk
under ladders (that are) leaning against buildings. I sometimes make a point
of it."
How much of a role does luck play in real life?
"None. There are certain instances when people appear lucky, but many times,
they have the things that society deem important, so they (get what they
want). Sometimes the people we call lucky are actually just qualified."
